Has the virus been transferred from the infected PC to the hard drive?

I used to rely on a portable hard drive at home because I had limited storage space. One day, I may have connected the hard drive to my computer without realizing there was a virus on the PC. I am worried that the virus may have infected the hard drive. What should I do if it did? The hard drive contains important photos that I need to access. I suspect the virus might be stealing my account passwords and information through a keylogger, but I'm not well-versed in handling such issues. What steps should I take in this situation?
