Is it MANDATORY to write data to numerical columns in the database?

Hello... There are two columns in the database, one is of type tinyint and the other is of type double. 1) The default values for both columns are NULL. 2) The parts related to both in the forms do NOT require input, YET, IF VALUES ARE NOT ENTERED FOR BOTH IN THE FORM, RECORD/UPDATE DOES NOT TAKE PLACE! I think there is something I don't know... I would appreciate it if you could enlighten me...
