Is there a way to earn through AdSense page views?

The question is quite simple actually. The ads on my website were launched today. Do they have to be clicked on for me to earn money? Don't I get paid for 1000 views? It seems absurd if earnings are based solely on clicks. For instance, why would a visitor click on a plain brand banner ad? However, even if they don't click, the brand is still in front of their eyes. For example, on YouTube, there are two different payment models, so why should ads have only one option?
