Should the payment be received after the completion of work or after the start of work?

Hello teachers, I was going to work and I asked to get paid after the job is done. I'm wondering if I made a mistake. Just in case, we are all humans and can make mistakes. That's why I always do it this way in case there is a mistake. Am I doing it wrong? How do you handle this?
