I downloaded a game from the internet to my computer. Occasionally, I started receiving emails to my Gmail account saying 'suspicious activity on your account'. Then, a random story was shared on my Instagram account without my knowledge. My nephew's Brawl Stars account had its email changed and cannot be accessed. Of course, these incidents didn't happen in just one day, but over a period of 3 months.
Most recently, last night, I received an email saying that the email associated with my Steam account was changed, and I lost access to it. I contacted Steam support to regain control of my account and also had the credit cards I used on the computer deactivated.
The reason I provided such detailed information is: what kind of virus could this be? Could it be a keylogger? When I scanned with Windows Defender, it didn't detect any threats. And most importantly, I am planning to format my computer using a USB drive, but since I will download Windows onto the USB from this computer, will the virus infect the USB drive?
