What is KIO?
KIO (KDE Input/output) is a part of the KDE architecture.
It provides access to files and websites through a single and powerful API. Applications written to use KIO can access a remote server as if they were operating on a local machine. KIO slaves are programs that provide services specific to a single protocol. The Protocols tab in Kinfocenter displays a list of all available protocols on the machine.
