What is MSAN?
MSAN, which stands for Multi Service Access Node, is a multi-service access point. MSAN devices provide high-quality service capabilities such as high-speed data, voice, information, video, and multimedia services. These devices include DSLAM and MSAN units. Cards (xDSL cards) inserted into the MSAN unit produce PSTN conversion tones. The DSLAM unit contains xDSL cards. MSAN devices provide internet access and telephone services by connecting to both ATM and IP/MPLS networks and exchanges via fiber.
Outdoor cabinets of MSAN devices connect to the network with fiber and to subscribers with copper or fiber cables. Thanks to these devices, the need to transmit conversion tones from the principal cable (PSTN line from the telephone exchange) to the field cabinet is eliminated. MSAN devices only utilize the local route of the existing copper network, and as they serve the role of a field cabinet, the field cabinets at their installation locations are removed.
